NEMA Membership

This describes the requirements to be an NEMA volunteer. Each unit may have additional requirements and expectations.

Requirements to be a Volunteer

The general requirements to be a volunteer in NEMA are listed below. Each unit has unit specific operational requirements in addition to those listed here.

  • No prerequisites except a desire to serve and willingness to learn
  • Age 18 or older
  • Pass background check, physical exam and drug screen
  • Not have been convicted of a felony
  • Sign the IEMA "Loyalty" oath
  • Be a resident of the Naperville area
  • Be a citizen or legal resident of the United States
  • Have a functional command of written and spoken English
  • Be in an appropriate physical and mental condition to serve in the selected unit
  • "Pass" an interview with the NEMA Volunteer Coordinator
  • An applicant may be rejected at any time during the process for just cause

The Naperville Emergency Management Agency does not discriminate against race, sex, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, marital status, age, or physical disability/handicap.

Conformance with City of Naperville and Naperville Fire Department Policies

All NEMA volunteers shall comply with all City of Naperville and Naperville Fire Department policies and procedures at all times.
